Pittock Mansion Picnic

Good E'en to all,

Sunday last was the Oregon Regency Society's Annual Pittock Mansion Picnic. Glorious blue sky stretched before us, and we reveled in the sunshine. This year was particularly well attended, many new faces were to be seen, as well as old acquaintances to renew. All Le Bon Ton founders were in attendance save Sir Michael, whom was spending the day with his brother. The Sullys & Cartwrights, along with Lady Deveraux set up a hunt board at one end, while the ORS ladies had a lovely buffet at the other. blankets were spread out between, with such a large costumed group creating a colourful spectacle against the more usual modern dressed visitors to the Pittock Mansion grounds. After luncheon, a lively game of Blind Man's Bluff was played on the front lawn. At one point in the afternoon, the authoress Mary Robinette Kowal stopped by our bit of lawn and introduced herself. Conversation on history, literature and fashion ensued between Ms Kowal, Le Chevalier, myself , Mrs Schreiber and Mme Bordeaux. By 4 o'clock, we realized we hadn't had our tour of the Mansion. While making our rounds of the well appointed rooms, Le Chevalier and myself happened upon Prof. & Mrs Schreiber looking for their little gentlemen. Following the sounds of jolly shouting & stomping overhead, we discovered them upstairs--appropriately near the Pittock children's nursery. The current exhibit at the Pittock Mansion is "The Thrill of the Climb". I think Mr Pittock would've enjoyed their hi jinx, as did we. Bring a bottle of wine & a ghost story to share; perhaps have your fortune told by The Tarot Lady. It's the night of a Full Moon when magic may happen, so be prepared!

Vive La France! Bastille Day Souvenirs

Thank you to all our guests for making our Fifth Year the best yet! There was quantities of gorgeous food (oh, the heavenly macaroons from 2 Tarts Bakery), endless champagne, and clashing swords. The Dueling and Sabrage (opening champagne with a saber) competitions continued most of the afternoon, interspersed with the costume contest & Commitee for Public Safety announcements. Congratulations to our contest winners, Sir Michael & Lady Deveraux...was it Sir M's new suit or his fancy footwork? Either way, the handsome couple waltzed their way into our hearts and away with a lovely bottle of wine. Salut!
As Mme Guillotine was on holiday in Nova Scotia, The Committee for Public Safety decided to have a "Lottery" for the entertainment of all involved. Each guest drew a name (aristocrat, revolutionary leader, artists or regular citizens) and was called before the CFPS court to answer for their crimes against the people of France. There was some hilarious confusion when one gentleman discovered he had drawn Lucille Duplessis, the wife of Camille Desmoulins. A good sport, he came before the court to beg for mercy on behalf of his "husband". Our intrepid Judge played no favourites, sentencing Charlotte Corday (Lady Sully) to wearing pink spandex and Mme du Barry (Le Chevalier) to drinking boxed wine. Quel Horreur!

Experimentations in Light & Space

As you will remember from our recent tea, Professor DR Schreiber practices the science of "natural philosophy" as a historical conjurer. At a recent small gathering, the professor invited a local photographer to capture the spirit of LBT. Little did we know that Mr Glen Bledsoe is also a member of the magicians' guild, applying the art to his camera lens. Here is an excerpt from our correspondence, after the shoot:

Mr Bledsoe:
"The low lighting was a particular challenge. My camera doesn't have a particularly high ISO compared to newer cameras. At 1600 the images were still dark and very noisy. However, thinking more like a painter than a photographer I post processed them in a way that reminds me of paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries."

Mme Theo:
"I was musing to myself, after seeing the first batch, that you seem to have transferred a magician's art of illusion & glamour and transposed it onto your photography. Is it a conscious effort, or just a surprising side effect of your two hobbies overlapping?"

Mr Bledsoe:
"Artists of all kinds create illusions. As a writer I create illusions in my readers minds, paint pictures, tell stories. Magic is much the same. Good magic tells a story while it creates an illusion. Photography or any of the graphic arts is similar. The purpose of a photo or a painting is to get your viewer to notice something visually that you, the artist, notice and want to the viewer to see as well. You may have to alter slightly or extensively that image so that the viewer will notice it as you did. That alteration is the illusion."

Bastille Day Picnic Update

Greetings Citizens,

I received an urgent missive this morning:

"on a tramp steamer to Nova Scotia...will return in 6 weeks...

So, seeking a long-needed respite from the ever demanding & blood thirsty crowds of Paris, Mme Guillotine will not be joining us this weekend.

Although The Committee for Public Safety is disappointed, we have other ways and means to mete out Revolutionary Justice. Join us Saturday, to find out how.

However, it's not just about heads rolling here at Le Bon Ton. Dont forget your Champagne for sabrage, and something yummy to share for the potluck. There will be a costume contest, single stick, fencing and petanque.

Sabrage & Dueling Updates

Attention Gentlemen! **

Here is a quick overview of the Dueling & Sabrage-Off competitions that will be held at the Fifth Annual Bastille Day Picnic:

The Dueling will consist of three rounds.
Smallsword (SCA rapier authorization or permission to participate)
Sabre (SCA C&T authorization or permission to participate)
Singlestick (anyone may participate)

Pairings will be pulled at random. Bouts are single elimination, fought to best of three 'good' hits.

The Sabrage-off is also single elimination.
First round -- sabre.
Second round - short blade (bayonet, Bowie knife, Chef's knife, etc.)
Third round -- butter knife
Fourth round -- wine glass

Bring four bottles of bubbly to enter.

**Ladies are welcome to enter the Dueling & Sabrage Off competitions--However Please Note: fencing masks must be worn in the Dueling competition. No exceptions for Big Hair, Hats or Turbans :)

There is a small site fee of $2, and we have the site from 2pm to dusk--or whenever we want to leave!

If you wish to bring your own libations, please remember Beer & Wine only please.
This is a child & pet friendly event, so bring the whole family and spend the afternoon with us.
And if you attend in costume, you are automatically entered into the contest. There will be a prize for Best/Most Original Costume!
If you bring a dish to share, please have a list of ingredients for our guests whom have allergies.

There will be Dueling, Petanque, and our first Sabrage-Off. More information on Sabrage (opening a champagne bottle with a Sabre) and how to participate in the Dueling will be posted by Le Chevalier.

Once Again, we will have the 7ft Guillotine and all attendees are encouraged to participate in our Live Action Guillotine game. Impromptu Cemetery Tour

A last minute reminder from Lady Deveraux caught my attention this Thursday last..."Footsteps in Time" a cemetery walking tour. How Romantic, I thought. And we haven't had it planned for months in advance, Wot! Le Chevalier thought I was quite impetuous and decreed we should have An Adventure. Sunday at half past 2 o'clock, we trotted off in the gig to the Mountain View Cemetery in Oregon City. One of the oldest cemeteries in the West, our trip proved a hidden treasure. Off of Molalla Avenue, and at the end of a residential community, a verdant vista greeted us. The grounds were dotted with headstones as expected, but great ancient fir trees and grandfather oaks stood as sentinels on the sloping lawns. The the sky was overcast, and tho' we had donned our lightest cottons, the air was warm and close. I wore sturdy boots and Le Chevalier kindly loaned me a walking stick. It had a skull for a handle...and though somewhat appropriate, I thought the mocking expression too morbid and covered his wicked grin with my scarf. Upon arrival, we waited in the cool of a large fir tree with Lady Deveraux.
Le Chevalier produced his spy glass so that she might discern the whereabouts of Sir Michael, strolling among the stones.

Our tour lasted approximately one hour and took us over the main section of the grounds. Many well known figures from Oregon City history are buried here, and there were eight personages scattered throughout the walk for us to meet. There were steamship captains, Civil War veterans, and mothers mourning their children. In between these "visitations", our guide discussed the symbolism to be found on the monuments and tombstones.
Of particular interest, were the headstones for the Woodmen of The World. A fraternal organization that used a distinctive large tree stump in the tombstone design. The organization still exists, and you can read more about them here:

A small family plot gated in curlicued iron fencing and gnarled Japanese maples beckoned.....Another excursion will have to be planned, a picnic with friends and perhaps a "headstone hunt" for additional famous Oregon City names. After the tour ended, we continued to meander and I fell in love with this strange fairytale tree. Perhaps a Cheshire Cat is napping on its branches....It seemed happy in this lonely out of the way portion of the landscape. One had to descend a steep slope with only a few shallow and Broken steps to mark out the spot.

A Visit to the Chinese Gardens

This past Sunday, the Sullys and the Cartwrights made their way to one of the cities hidden treasures, the Chinese Gardens. The garden conjured images of far away lands to the East and it’s beauty was breathtaking.

Season Finale of Bach Cantata and event reminders

Greetings Dear Friends,

Yesterday was the season finale for the Bach Cantata. Although I was fighting a spring cold, I was most determined to attend the concert. Therefore, with much anticipation, and wrapped in a warm shawl, Le Chevalier bundled me into the chaise for "church". Although we were the only members of Le Bon Ton in attendance, our fellow time-travelers from the Portland Steampunk Society were also on hand to round out our group. As a little side note, several of the Zepplin crew speak German, and were bantering a bit amongst themselves as we all found our seats.

Without a doubt, the choir is a treasure. As a universal language, such music soars forth freely from the heart and transcends the need for translation. Our favourite bass soloist, Mr Jacob Herbert, once again brought his jolly enthusiasm and clear phrasing to the stage. The other soloists were in fine form, and Mr Nelson provided some background information on a composer I was not familiar with, prior to the performance. Jan Dismas Zelenka was a contemporary of Bach's, and his piece "Litaniae de venerabile Sacramento" was written for the Feast of Corpus Christi. I adore Latin chorus' and this performance included both solos and vocal combinations that peaked my interest.

The dates for next season 2011-12 are available. The opening concert is November 6th. However, Le Chevalier and myself are eagerly awaiting the Christmas Oratorio in early December, to which tickets are required.

A Rainy Picnic

On Sunday, a small group of us convened at the Peninsula Rose Garden for a small picnic. We took shelter under the large, and stunning gazebo overlooking the gardens as the rains continued to pour. It was a lovely afternoon full of good wine, good food, and lovely company.

Spring Tea

Le Bon Ton and guests convened at the estate of Sir Michael and Lady Devereux, on Saturday last, for an afternoon of refreshment, polite society, and entertainment. The party was graced by the talents of Mme de Bordeaux, in a reading of the Rivals, as well as Professor D.R. Schreiber and his magical experiments. A wonderful time was certainly had by all.

Bach Contata and VMB Review

Greetings from Mme Theo:

We have had 2 events back to back, with a third next weekend. I am playing a little catch up with today's entry and combining a review of the Bach cantata and the Vampire Masquerade Ball together.

Bach Cantata Choir: Sunday last was our second visit to the Rose City Park Presbyterian Church, home of Portland's Bach Cantata Choir. Their mission is to sing the entire set of cantatas composed by JS Bach over a period of 20 years. An ambitious goal that they have been pursuing since 2006. For those unfamiliar with the Cantatas, they are religious in nature. However most are sung in German, and as the Chevalier happily pointed out "anything sung in German sounds like a drinking song".
The program is usually broken up with other composers from various epochs. For example, Giovanni Palestrina's "Sicut Cervus" and Dieterich Buxtehude "Ad Faciem" were included for this special Lenten Concert. We were graciously introduced to the choir's director, Ralph Nelson, on our last visit. A soft spoken gentleman with quiet humour, Mr Nelson explained each piece in context of the time period and it's choice for this liturgical holiday. His historical tidbits added to the experience, as well as providing a base for those whom may not be familiar with the religious metaphors.
The concerts run a little over an hour, and an amazing amount of music is packed into that short period of time. The soloists have excellent musical pedigrees. Some have won prestigious awards and their vocal training is included in the program. Combined with the enthusiasm and talent that the orchestra puts into the performances, the overall spirit is infectious. The concerts are free, but the Choir survives (and prospers) on the generous donations from the community.
Many of the performers and audience members greeted us most affably on our return visit. The volunteers had generously reserved a pew for LBT members, upon my request. And, although we had some last minute cancellations, members of the Portland Steampunk Society arrived in time to round out our little group.

Vampire Masquerade Ball: To quote the website "The Annual Vampire’s Masquerade Ball is a night of gothic elegance and decadence highly anticipated each year in the city of roses" As past attendees of several balls, Chevalier and myself can attest that Portland's 9th Annual VMB did not disappoint. Located in the historic Melody Ballroom, guests are encouraged to indulge in themed cocktails, view steamy burlesque and other performance art, and participate in a Midnight Waltz hauntingly performed by Adam Hurst and his ghostly cello. Outside of norm of LBT outings, the ball was proposed as an adventure in the vein of the Hellfire Club, frequented by the likes of Byron at the turn of the 18th Century. And so, an evening in which members may wear more fantastical costuming, as evidenced by our own Lady Sully and Mrs Cartwright's gowns a la victime.

The evening commenced at 8:30pm with our arrival at the pre-cocktail party hosted by Chateau Iniquitous. A sirloin roast was prepared for guests, and Chevalier and Captain Cartwright sabred open bottles of champagne. Guests were treated to an impromptu performance on the pianoforte by another guest. The pre-party is a chance to mingle more intimately but perform more formal introductions. However, by 9:30pm, our group decided to move on to the main event at the Melody Ballroom. And though the name suggests vampires would be in attendance, there was little blood nor fangs and only one confirmed zombie sighting. Mme Bordeaux and myself spent much of the evening gawking at the other guests and greeting old acquaintances. A gentleman in our party kindly prepared a glass of Absinthe for me, and like a little votive to the gods of decadence, it glowed cheerily in the half lit ballroom.
As usual, the other attendees' costumes were gorgeous and inventive. One guest sported a bird skull on her dainty chapeau. You can view her designs for sale on Etsy at www.voodoodolldesigns.com.
The time flew by quickly, so that after several turns around the dance floor and constant costume ogling, Madame and I discovered we had completely ignored or missed most of the performance artists. Not ones to despair, we still had a few moments to prepare our souls for transcendence at the Witching Hour. The local composer & cellist, Adam Hurst took the stage to perform the Midnight Waltz. Of surpassing tragic beauty, Mr Hurst's cello wove a lyrical magic spell around the swaying couples that waltzed in the semi-darkness. A Visit to Portland Art Museum

The weather was cold and blustery outside on Sunday last. Our small party made our way to town to visit the treasures at the Art Museum. The museum contains a number of American and European Art from the Middle Ages to the present day. One of the favorite exhibits amongst the ladies was a collection of fine Silver from the Renaissance through the Georgian period. It was a lovely outing.

Sir Thomas Sully

The Bach Cantata Choir of Portland performed four lovely pieces ranging from Handel to Vivaldi, and of course Bach. The performers were stupendous and the director delighted us with his wit and charm.

The Choir and their illustrious director, Mr. Ralf Nelson.

After the concert, the director and a number of performers came out to the audiences specifically to meet us. It was a wonderful honor.

Following the delightful performance, we took our carriages to the Peninsula Rose Garden for a stroll in the outdoors.

The weather was overcast, but comfortable and there was no rain to hinder our stroll.

The flowers were in their winter state, but the shrubbery was quite green and lovely. The event was a lovely start to the Season.

Holiday in Retrospect

As the curtain is drawn down on the old year, I cannot help but consider how quickly the Holidays have passed here at LBT. We had a busy time, with 2 events, back to back at the Ainsworth House in November, not to mention our Georgian Christmas on December 25th. I beg forgiveness for not blogging of the final events of the year With the usual bustling to prepare for family & presents and other festive endeavors, capturing the adventures in writing seemed elusive. In retrospective, we are blessed to have such an extended network of costuming friends and access to several groups like the MMA and The Oregon Regency Society.
In November, Le Bon Ton's Colonel Le Chevalier de Valois was a special guest of the McLoughlin Memorial Society at their first Dr John McLoughlin Soiree. Le Chevalier is an executive chef in the modern world, and was asked to donate his time & services for the MMA's silent auction. A small contingent of LBT members attended in costume and were even able to interact with Himself, the stern & civic-minded historical figure of Dr John McLoughlin.

The second event at the Ainsworth House in Oregon City, was the Villians Ball hosted by ORS. As always the Ainsworth House is a delight to tour, and there was much dancing and merriment. Spirit's Tour 2010

Dear Gentle Readers

October has always been a favourite month of mine. The falling leaves, the stormy skies, the spirits that walk at night. So, when the opportunity arose for the LBT Founders to attend Oregon City's Annual Spirits Tour, Lady G and I could find no rest until we were able to obtain tickets to the event. Mme Bordeaux also joined our little band of travelers, and it was she that christened it "The Spooky Tour".

Our adventure began at the community center where we handed in to a large public coach. A motley crew of like-minded folk were assembled, and quite strangely garbed. I assumed they must be wayward spirits or foreigners traveling abroad, like ourselves. Our otherworldly Guide, paid most particular attention to our small party and asked whence we had come and what time. Was this not an unusual query? We thought so ourselves, but assured him that it was still 17 Hundred and Ninety Five, and that God Save The King, Louis XVIII shall be restored to the throne of France. I watched the guide keenly thereafter, thinking the poor man might have a bottle of spiritshidden in his pocket. However, I could discern no slurring of speech or furtive movements. Therefore, I determined that his humors must be out of balance, and addled his brain pan. Our "Mobile Theatre" stopped at many places of historical interest, including the McLoughlin House, Rose Farm, and River View Cemetery. We encountered many famous figures of Oregon City, including Dr Barclay and the illustrious Dr John McLoughlin himself. At Rose Farm, some young ladies were trying to ascertain their true love in a mirror, and a particularly silly one even fainted. It was all excessively diverting.

The Captain’s Dinner

On Saturday last, the society of the Ton convened at the country estate of Sir Michael and Lady Devereux to welcome Captain and Mrs. Cartwright home from their sojourn in India. The guests were treated to the delights of Indian cuisine by Lady D’s accomplished chef, Monsieur Gaston. During dinner Captain Cartwright received an urgent missive from His Majesty the King informing him of a well deserved promotion for his services in India as well as command of a new 44 gun ship, the HMS Regulus. After dinner the guests took a preamble through the local parish and visited some of the historical sites in the area. After which the fine party returned to Sir Michael’s estate where they were introduced to a scandalous peasant’s dance from the Continent, known as the Waltz. Many great fortunes were won and lost at Sir Michael’s gaming tables that night and the guests played well into the wee hours of the morning. It was most certainly a grand party the likes of which shall never be equaled.

Portland Pirate Festival

Last Sunday, Le Bon Ton’s founders decided to take a merry jaunt into fantasy and attend the Portland Pirate Festival. We had a lovely time and made a few new friends who share our passion for history, namely The King’s Navy. Here are a few portraits from the event.

A Trip to Fort Bell

Colonel Valois went off into the wilds this weekend with his good friend Craig Schmidt to fire off a few rounds of Black Powder.
Fort Bell is the home base of a historic muzzle loading group based northeast of Vancouver.
They have a small fort built and furnished better than most living history exhibits.
Fort Bell features an enclosed and furnished area with a black smithing forge and wood fired oven. The individual camps were appropriately primitive and wonderfully set up. The morning started by meeting lots of great people while walking through clouds of bacon smoke and the wafting smell of fresh coffee.
The site features a 21 station shooting trail. As well as a pistol trail and archery trail.
Novelty shoots take up the time after the trail shoots.

Bishop’s Close Garden Tour

We had a lovely event on Sunday with a group of most amiable ladies and gentlemen. Our day started with a tour through the beautiful Bishop’s Close gardens and ended our afternoon at the local pub for food and libations. It was a lovely way to spend a summer’s afternoon.

Bastille Day 2010 -- Pas d'Armes

Hello All,

Along with the 4th Annual Bastille Day event, Le Bon Ton hosted its first historical combat tournament.
We had five competitors and ran a round robin tournament with the odd person out marshaling the field.

In the end Colonel the Chevalier Etienne de Valois was the overall victor.
Colonel Valois also had the best score in Sabre.
Oberst Christoff Von Sherer had the best score in Rapier.
Oberst Sherer tied with Colonel Valois for the best score in Smallsword.
And Talbot had the best score in Singlestick.

Le Bon Ton will keep a running total of Tournament victories and points scored in each discipline.
At next year's Bastille Day we will award prizes and reset the Tournament.

First, Le Bon Ton would like to thank all of you who came to our Bastille Day Celebration. It was a lovely event full of good food, good libation, and a great guillotine. The game of Guillotine was definitely the highlight of the day. Many were “executed” and the committee of public safety showed no mercy. Here are a few photos for your enjoyment.

An Apology...

As many of you know, we had an event scheduled yesterday at the Peninsula Rose Garden. Upon our arrival, we found that our plans had been thwarted by an unannounced festival taking place in the park and the surrounding areas. We rounded up all we could find and relocated our event to Laurelhurst Park, at the last minute. We sincerely hope that none of you were left behind and if you were we apologize for the lack of communication. We hope to see you all at future events and hopefully a mishap of this type will not happen again. In the future, we are going to ask for RSVP's with cell phone numbers and emails so we can contact you quickly if there is a last minute change of venue. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience. A Tour of the Japanese Gardens

Le Bon Ton and the Oregon Regency Society went for a lovely afternoon stroll through one of Portland’s great treasures, the Japanese Gardens. It was peaceful and beautiful and the weather was perfect. Our historical attire caused quite the stir amongst other visitors and many photos were taken throughout the day. It was a very nice afternoon.

Greetings Friends and Readers,

Over the years, I have slowly acquired a number of books that address the art of mantua making, tailoring, and historical sewing skills. There are some excellent books available as well as some that fall a little short of the bar. Here are some of my favorites.

Janet Arnold Patterns of Fashion I: I adore this book. It is a must have to any costumer. Janet Arnold painstakingly documented a number of exquisite garments from various eras and drafted patterns based on their measurements. I truly cannot say enough about this book.

Costume in Detail by Nancy Bradford: No costumer should be without this book. It is an incredible resource packed with invaluable information. Bradford has taken detail measurements and drawings from extant garments from the 18th century through the early 20th century. The book shows immense hand drawn details of each garment and how they work. I have used this book time and time again for multiple projects.

The Cut of Women's Clothes by Nora Waugh: Another invaluable resource for historical clothing. Waugh's diagrams are not as easy to follow as Arnold's, but are usable if one knows how to scale patterns. There are some amazing garments in this book that one does not find elsewhere. A must have for your costume shelf.

The Cut of Men's Clothes by Nora Waugh: It is not as comprehensive as the Cut of Women’s clothes. However, it is another indispensable resource. It is one of the few books available for gentlemen's clothing. It is structured in the same way as the Cut of Women’s Clothing.

Fashion Taschen 25th Annicersary: This books is immaculate eye candy. It containts full color photographs of the Kyoto Costume Institute’s glorious collection covering the 18th century through the 20th century. It is so inspirational and beautiful. This is an absolute necessity for any costumer.

18th Century Embroidery Techniques by Gail Marsh: Another gem of a book. Marsh has carefully drawn embroidery patterns from extant garments. My only caveat with this book is the lack of photographs of the original garments. Luckily, some of the pieces can be found in other books, such as the Kyoto Costume Institute’s book. It’s a wonderful book, especially if one has an interest in embroidery.

There are many more amazing books to be had. This is just a small sampling of some of my favorites.

Bartitsu Seminar, through the eyes of a novice

Following Col. Etienne's posting from March 21st I wish to expound on the Bartitsu Seminar that was hosted here in Portland on the 20th and 21st day of the month of March in the year of our Lord 2010.

First off, I have no previous training in any type of self defense (although I did learn the fine art of moving over the ground with much rapidity away from any danger).

As a novice to self defense the first thing that I was thrown into learning was being aware of my body. That is to say, being aware of every part of my body at all times as I learned how to move. If I could remember to the day's I was learning to walk, I think it might be something like that. As I learned how to move, where to step as I was moving my hands to a certain place, I was in awe of how easy our instructor (Tony Wolf) made it appear.

I was excited to learn this "new" mixed martial art. At the end of the two days I was sore, felt more confident and felt privileged to be tutored by a master.

One last note, I have since seriously thought about carrying a cane in everyday life, but I think I shall refrain (save for our marvelous events).

Before I go I will tell you about the "the unconsciousness threatening choke hold" the Colonel alluded to. One of the last items we learned was the choke hold, how to render your opponent unconscious in a matter of five seconds. I was foolish enough to volunteer for Tony to demonstrate the aforementioned hold. I felt as though my eyes were to pop, my throat to collapse and my mind to melt into a puddle of "ahhhhhhhhhh I'm gunna die!" However, thankfully I did not die. A simple tap on the mat and Tony released.

St. Patrick's Day Celebration

We supped on eggs, ham, scones, fruit, and other Irish delights at the Highland Stillhouse Pub in Oregon City. It was a lovely gathering of like-minded souls. Bartitsu Seminar

Good Evening,

I know that 1898 is a bit outside of our historical area of focus, but we must take opportunities when they present themselves.
This weekend three members of Le Bon Ton (Aaron, Brad and Christian -- using modern names) plus one member of Portland Steampunk (Sean O'Sirin) had the opportunity to attend a Bartitsu Seminar by Tony Wolf and hosted by our local Academia Duellatoria (Western Martial Arts School).
Bartitsu was the project of Edward William Barton-Wright and was an early (if not the earliest) attempt to create a mixed martial art style. Barton combined Swiss cane fighting, French Savate, English Pugilism and Japanese Jujitsu into a viable martial art and self-defense system. The style would probably be lost to history if not for the use of Bartitsu by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as the mechanism to bring Sherlock Holmes back from the dead. Doyle had killed off the famous detective in a battle to the death against Prof. Moriarty, however, public pressure demanded Holmes' return and Doyle stated that Holmes had used "Baritsu" to defeat Moriarty.
The historic material is a bit fragmented and requires much research and extrapolation from the instructors and practitioners. That is where the seminars come in. With a mix of canonical Bartitsu and extrapolations based on related material (neo-Bartitsu) Tony Wolf gave a very interesting visit to the martial thinking of a Victorian/Edwardian gentleman. The gentleman's cane becomes instrumental in the art, but the before unknown in Europe art of Jujitsu is the real heart of the system. Practitioners are expected to be versed in all the forms, but when it comes down to it Jujitsu is the secret weapon. Barton's gift was to blend these styles to allow an English Gentleman to defend himself, very effectively, against a variety of threats. Generating an escape where possible, but not being concerned about taking the fight to joint locks and breaks on the ground if the situation warranted it.
Overall an excellent seminar. Tony Wolf is an excellent instructor and I fully intend to continue with my own Bartitsu research. Be sure to ask Aaron about the unconsciousness threatening choke hold.
